Excess sodium intake is a leading but modifiable risk factor for mortality, with implications on hypertension, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). This review will focus mainly the limitations of current measurement methods balance particularly in patients CKD who have complex physiology. The suboptimal accuracy excretion seemingly more marked evolving understanding tissue (skin muscle) sodium. Tissue represents an extrarenal influence homeostasis demonstrated clinical associations hypertension inflammation. Measurement has been largely unexplored CKD. Development adoption comprehensive dynamic assessment body needed to better understand physiology human explore therapeutic strategies improve outcomes population.
